In 2018, I worked with the Director of Retail at the Space Needle and Chihuly Garden and Glass to revamp an old Mold-a-matic machine from the 60s. He found one from an antiques vendor in Florida and had it shipped to Seattle. I helped design the new graphics with a 60s feel so we could use it again in the gift shop at the bottom of the Space Needle.
We also installed a tablet on the right side of the cutout on the front to loop retro footage in black and white about the Space Needle’s debut in 1962 at the World’s Fair. We also made sure that the audio was on so you could get the full effect of the narrator’s voice from that era. On the left side of the cutout is one of the Space Needle souvenirs housed on a retro gold shelf.
To get a souvenir from the Mold-a-matic, simply insert a $5 bill, and the machine will make you an injection-molded plastic Space Needle in minutes. Witness the wonder!
